Event Discord card template
Event cards put the time in the description and RSVP on a real https button, so the announcement and the action are the same message.
Office hours — Friday 18:00 UTC
Live build of a component embed, then we paste it into Discord together. Seats are limited.
Who this is for
- Communities running AMAs, streams, and office hours
- Organisers who announce once and then have to correct the time
Reach for it when: AMAs, launch streams, office hours, and meetups announced in a Discord server.
The time is the thing that breaks
Most event links in Discord lose exactly the detail that matters. A Luma or Partiful unfurl shows the event name and an image; the start time is behind the click, in the reader's guessed timezone.
Write “Friday 18:00 UTC” into the description where the preview will render it, and point RSVP at Luma, Partiful, or an .ics file you host. Add a calendar button as the second action.
When the clock slips
Edit the hosted slug rather than posting a correction. Everyone who already saw the announcement is looking at a message that will refresh itself once Discord's cache expires.
There is no live countdown. Discordbot snapshots your HTML and does not execute JavaScript, so a ticking timer widget will never tick inside the unfurl — it will render as whatever it said at crawl time, which is worse than a plain date.
Common questions
- Can I show a countdown on the card?
- No. Discord renders a snapshot of server-side HTML, so a countdown would be frozen and misleading. Put an absolute time with a timezone in the description instead.
- What should the calendar button point at?
- An .ics file or a calendar page on a host you control. It has to be https — Discord drops http buttons.
