Changelog Discord card template

A changelog Discord card keeps one URL while the notes underneath it change. Edit the slug, and Discord picks up the new text on its next crawl — the message you pinned three weeks ago is the one that updates.

Patch 2.4 — The dungeon is meaner

• Chests actually open

• Peak-hour servers hold

• Moon gravity is a feature now

Same URL. New notes. Discord recrawls in about 30 minutes.

Who this is for

  • Teams that post “we shipped” in a Discord channel every week
  • Indie game studios running patch notes where their players already are
  • Anyone maintaining a pinned status message

Reach for it when: Weekly release notes, game patches, or any status you would rather rewrite than re-post.

One pin instead of a new post each week

The usual pattern is a fresh message per release, so the channel fills with history and nobody can find the current state. The alternative is editing a plain message, which drops off the top of the channel and has no preview at all.

A hosted card is the middle path. Write a version number in the title and bullets in the description, then edit in place. Re-import the source URL only if the OG image changed; your buttons stay put.

Game patches and stores

Communities already paste Steam and itch.io links, but those unfurls carry the store's framing, not your patch list. A component embed carries both — a gallery of two stills, plus Store, Patch notes, and Community as buttons.

Keep the gallery to images. Video pushes the crawl past the time budget Discordbot allows, and a card that times out falls back to the plain Open Graph tile.

After a hotfix, edit the hosted slug. Players who starred the original message keep the same URL and see the refreshed preview once the cache expires.

What this is not good for

Not live scores, not play clocks, not anything that must be correct at the exact second someone reads it. Discordbot takes a snapshot of your HTML; there is no push channel in a link preview.

Good: “Patch 2.4 is live”, “sold out”, “office hours moved to Friday”, “40 left”. Anything where half an hour of staleness is survivable.

The same template, other jobs

  • New version out

The dungeon is deceptively tougher. Gallery, store, patch notes.

Same template for game patches, with Store and Patch notes.

Common questions

Do people have to re-paste the link after I edit it?
No — that is the point of the hosted card. Every existing message points at the same URL, and Discord refreshes the preview when its cache expires. Copied inline scripts are snapshots and do need a re-paste.
Can I use markdown in the notes?
Write bullets and line breaks in the description and they carry through to the card's text block. Discord's component text does not render the full markdown set, so keep formatting simple.
